Usually Carbon dioxide is used in fire extinguishers.

CO2 helps to cut of oxygen supply as it is denser than air and settle at bottom.

It is stored as liquid in cylinder so when it is sprayed it expands and become gas. Thus, lowering the temperature.

One more advantage of using CO2 is that it does not affect electric appliances.
