Let us take the number Aanamika thought of as x. Then,

◘ Multiplying it by 2 → 2x

◘ Adding 5 to the product → 2x + 5

According to the question, the number obtained thus is 17.

Therefore, the following equation is formed:

\bf{2x+5=17}

Let us solve it.

  • Transposing 5 to the RHS,

\sf{\Rightarrow 2x=17-5}

  • Subtracting 5 from 17,

\sf{\Rightarrow 2x=12}

  • Transposing 2,

\sf{\Rightarrow x=\dfrac{12}{2}}

  • Dividing 12 by 2,

\boxed{\bf{\Rightarrow x=6}}

Therefore, the number she had thought of is 6.
