The coal was (3) lignite.

  1. Coal is formed naturally through a process, where buried plant material converts into harder and more carbon rich form.
  2. Coal is of four quality, with lignite being the poorest quality and anthracite being the best quality.
  3. Anthracite, also known by the name hard coal, has fixed percentage of high amount of carbon.
  4. Bituminous is the lower in quality in comparison to anthracite and it's characteristic is high heating value.
  5. Subbituminous is further lower quality succeeded by lignite.
  6. Peat refers to partly decayed matter which is converted into coal.
