Given :  The circumference of the large wheel is 4.2m, and that of the small wheel is  0.9m. In the beginning, the valves on both wheels are at the lowest point.

To Find : After a  few metres, both valves are again at the lowest point at the same time. After how  many metres does this happen for the first time?

Solution:

The circumference of the large wheel is 4.2m,

that of the small wheel is  0.9m

in one rotation large wheel  covers = 4.2 m = 420 cm

in one rotation small wheel covers = 0.9 m  = 90 cm

Both wheel need to cover complete rotations

Find LCM of  420 and 90

420 = 2 * 2 * 3 * 5 * 7

90 = 2 * 3  * 3 * 5

LCM =  2 * 2 * 3 * 3 * 5 * 7

= 1260

1260 cm = 12.6 m

After 12.6 m both wheels are at the lowest point.
