ABC and BDE are two equilateral triangles such that BD=2/3BC. Find the ratio of the areas of triangles ABC and BDE.

BD = 2/3BC
therefore BC/BD = 3/2
triangle ABC and triangle BDE are similar               (AA)   (angles = 60)
Ar tri ABC/ Ar tri BDE = (BC/BD)^2                          (areas of similar triangles)
                                   = (3/2)^2
                                   =9/4
the ratio is 9:4
