Given:

3 circles with a radius of 1 cm each

A triangle formed by joining the centers of the three circles as shown.

To find:

Area of the shaded region

Solution:

Th given triangle is an equilateral triangle with its edge length equal to 2 X Radius of circle

= 2cm

Area of triangle = √3/4 X (edge length)²

= √3/4 X 4 = √3 cm²

Area of 1 sector = ∅/ 360 X π R²

= 60/360 X π

= π/6 cm²

Area of 3 such sectors= 3 X π/6 cm²

= π/2 cm²

Area of shaded region = Area of the triangle - Area of 3 sectors

= √3 - π/2 cm²

The area of the shaded region is √3 - π/2 cm².
