∴Ab=cd , bc=ad

∴x+y=16 ⇒x=16-y

and, x-y=12

⇒(16-y)-y=12        (∵ from previous equation,x=16-y)

⇒16-2y=12

⇒2y=16-12

⇒2y=4

⇒y=2

∴y=2 ∴x=16-2=14

∴x=14,y=4
