in any square both diagonals are equal
so AC = BD = 12cm = d
area of square is
 =  \frac{d \times d}{2} \:   {cm}^{2}
  = \frac{12 \times 12}{2}  \: {cm }^{2}
 = 72 {cm}^{2}
