In the figure AXYD, ||gram AXYD and ΔAED have the same base AD and are between the same parallel (AD||XY)

⇒ar(AXYD)=2*ar(AED)

given ar(AED)=20 cm²

⇒ar(AXYD)=40 cm²

Similarly, ar(XBCY)=2* ar(BEC)

ar(XBCY)=20 cm²

ar(ABCD)=ar(AXYD)+ar(XBCY)

             =(40+20) cm²

             = 60 cm²
