Answer:

2) Friction

Friction stops Abhay from sliding down smoothly.

Explanation:

Friction is a force that occurs whenever two objects or surfaces rub against each other. Friction affects the speed of an object and not the direction. Friction slows down objects. Friction is also called frictional force. Friction plays a major role in our life.

1. We need friction to walk. If there was no friction between our feet and the ground, we would be slipping on everything.

We cannot walk easily on ice because it is very smooth. There is very little between the ice and our feet, so we tend to slip and fall.

2. We need friction to write on a piece of paper with a pencil. If there was no friction, the pencil would keep slipping out of our hands. Also, the lead of the pencil would not be able to make marks on the paper without friction.

3. Friction is also needed for driving cars. If there was no friction between the tyres of a car and the road, the tyres would just spin and the car would not move. Also, it is the friction between the brakes and the tyres that enables a car to stop.

4. Friction produces heat. When we strike a match stick, it rubs against the rough side of a match box. This generates heat and the match stick is lighted.
