Answer:

The value of a = 2 and b = 6 or a= -2 and b = -6.

Step-by-step explanation:

In the given equation of complex numbers abi = 3a – b +12i can also be written as

(0) + abi = (3a – b) + 12i ………. (i)

Equation (i) have real and imaginary values in it.

So, from (i) we can deduce that both the real parts and the imaginary parts are equal to each other respectively.

Therefore, we get two equations from (i)

0 = 3a – b   ………(ii)

ab = 12 ……(iii)

from equation (ii) we get

0 = 3a - b

Or, b =3a ……(iv)

equating (iv) in (iii)

a * 3a = 12

or, 3a² = 12

or, a² = 12/3 = 4

or, a = ± 2

Now, for calculating the value of b we have two values of a

  • When a = +2

                   b = 3a = 3 * 2 = 6

  • When a = -2

                   b = 3a =3 * (-2) = -6
