One of the most revolutionary social reforms of the Jacobin Period was the Abolition of slavery in french colonies . The colonies in Caribbean - Martinique , Guadeloupe and San Domingo were most important suppliers of commodieties such as tabacoo , indigo , sugar and coffee but when the shortage of labour on the plantation was seen , it encouraged the Triangular Slave Trade between Europe , Africa and America in seventeenth Century.
French merchants bought the slaves from local cheiftains from ports like - Nantes or Bordeaux of African coasts . Then , they weresold to plantation Owners . However , the slavery was not Criticized largely throughout the eighteenth centuary .
The National Assembly held long debates about the rightsof the man but fearing opposition from buisnessman it did not pass any law to abolish slave trade . In , 1794 , the Convention legislated to free slaves in the french overseas possesions but it lasted for a short term . After 10 years , slavery was reintroduced by Napolean Bonaparte . It was finally abolished in 1848 in French colonies .
