Though all the people supported the annexation of the western territories at first as they thought that it will lead to flourishing of the country, but when tension started to build between the north and south the abolitionists began to oppose the annexation because introduction of new principles could create conflict between the sectional peoples.
This may lead to war between the sectional areas and thus will result in many casualties to the nation.
