When ferrous sulphate is heated strongly, the following reaction takes place

2FeSO4.7H2O → Fe2O3 + SO2 + SO3.

While SO2 and SO3 evolve out as gases, the residue left is the solid - Fe2O3 (ferric oxide) - which is a reddish brown powder.
