⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ARCHIMEDES

Archimedes was a most famous mathematician, astronomer, engineer and inventor in ancient Greece. He was born in the Greek city state of Syracuse on the island of Sicily in approximately 287 BC. He is especially important for his discovery of the relation between the surface and the volume of a sphere and its circumscribing cylinder. He discovered the laws of levers and pulleys which allow us to move heavy objects using small forces.

He is most famous for discovering the law of hydrostatics, sometimes know as 'Archimedes principal', stating that a body immersed in fluid loses weight equal to the weight of the amount of fluid it displaces.

He was killed by a Roman soldier in 212 BC. He was burried in a tomb on which carved a sphere within a cylinder. This was his wish, because he believed it to be his greatest achievement. \:

Something Interesting!!

  • Archimedes wrote, a short treatise in which he made an estimate of the number of grains of sand in the world. This treatise is known as Sand Reckoner. In this work, he hit up two of the most powerful peculiarities which are a part of the modern number script.
  • The basic practical unit of time is the mean solar day. We define all other time units in terms of it. A mean solar day is based on the average time needed for the earth to turn once on its axis.
  • A googol number is 1 followed by a hundred zeroes. Even larger than the googol is googolplex. It is defined as 1 followed by a googol of zeroes. It is claimed that there would not even a room between the earth and the moon to write all the zeroes in a googolplex.
