  • The black soil is spread over about 15% of the total area of India.

  • The Deccan lava and the climate have played major roles in the formation of this soil.

  • Black soil is found in Maharashtra, Western Madhya Pradesh, few areas of Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka of peninsular plateau.

  • This soil has more contents of iron, lime, calcium, potash, aluminium and magnesium.

  • It is fertile and sticky.

  • It has the capacity to retain moisture for longer time. When the moisture dries up, cracks develop in this soil.

  • Crops like cotton,linseed ,mustard, groundnut, tobacco and udad can be grown in black soil.

  • As it is much favourable for cotton crop, it is known as 'Cotton Soil'.

  • The black soil is also known as 'Regur'.
