The Deccan Traps are a Large Igneous Province or LIP (i.e. an extremely large accumulation of igneous rocks, including plutonic rocks or volcanic rock formations, arising when hot magma extrudes from inside the Earth and flows out. The source of many or all LIPs is variously attributed to mantle plumes or to processes associated with plate tectonics.) located on the Deccan Plateau of west central India.

The term "trap" has been used in geology since 1785–95 for such staircase like rock formations. It is derived from the Scandinavian word for stairs ("trappa") and refers to the step-like hills forming the landscape of the region.
