                              Plastic

Definition : A material which could be moulded into desired shapes is called plastics.

Did you know ?

Alexander Parkes made the first man-made plastic.

Types of Plastics

There are two types of plastics :

(i) Thermoplastic

(ii) Thermosetting plactics.

1. Thermoplastic

The word 'Thermo' means 'heat' and 'plastic' means 'to melt to desired shapes'.Thermoplastic can be given desired shape by melting. When we supply heat than it can be moulded into desired shapes. These are long chain polymers with no cross-linking between the chains.

Example : Polythene, polyester and PVC are some common examples.

2. Thermosetting plastic

Those plastics in which chain get highly cross-linked on heating and can be moulded only once is called thermosetting plastic. Thermosetting plastics are irreversible, it means that they can not be given another shape by melting. These are hard plastics. Thermosetting plastic do not melt on heating because they maintain their shape.

Example : Bakelite and Malemine are the two examples of thermosetting plastic.
