The World’s first university arguably was established in Takshashila in 700 BC. More than 10,500 students from all over the world studied more than 60 subjects. This great university was first attacked by barbarians and was severely damaged in 5th century CE and then totally destroyed once and for all by the Islamic invaders during 12th century CE.
The University of Nalanda built in the 4th century BC was one of the greatest achievements of ancient India in the field of education. It was also destroyed by Turkish Muslim invaders under Bakhtiyar Khalji in 1193
The system of education prevalent in the country deprived of the encouragement and support of the state and depended mostly on the charities of the public.
During medieval period, education was not considered a social duty or a state function. It was merely a personal or family affair.
Islamic institution of education in India included traditional madrassas and maktabs which taught grammar, philosophy, mathematics, and law influenced by the Greek traditions inherited by Persia and the Middle East before Islam spread from these regions into India.
