The entire Hirakud dam is 25.8 km. long. The construction of Herakud dam began in 1948. The dam started in 1957. This dam also supports power stations.

It is the longest major earthen dam in Asia measuring 25.8Km including dykes. This dam support two main power houses. The dam helps control floods in Mahanadhi delta and irritated upto 75,000 square kilometers of land.
