Plants like sugar cane, potato etc reproduce asexually.
That means they have nothing to do with the fertilization, ovum and the zygote stuff.
A completely grown sugar cane is cut into big pieces containing nodes.
Then they are planted again in the soil and the leaves grow from the nodes of the plant.

Node are small projection that appear alternately in almost equally distanced in a plant.
