Human waste The river flows through 100 cities with populations over 100,000; 97 cities with populations between 50,000 to 100,000, and about 48 towns. A large proportion of the sewage water with higher organic load in the Ganges is from this population through domestic water usage.

according to the pollution india is in highlight

Explanation:

The river Ganges was ranked as the second most polluted rivers of the world in 2017. [5][6][7] Raghubir Singh, an Indian photographer, has noted that no one in India spoke of the Ganges as polluted until the late 1970s. However, pollution has been an old and continuous process in the river as by the time people were finally speaking of the Ganges as polluted, stretches of over six hundred kilometres were essentially ecologically dead zones.[8]

A number of initiatives have been undertaken to clean the river but failed to deliver as desired results.[9] After getting elected, India's Prime minister Narendra Modi affirmed to work in cleaning the river and controlling pollution.[10] Subsequently, the Namami Ganga project was announced by the government in the July 2014 budget.[11] An estimated Rs 2,958 Crores (US$460 million) have been spent until July 2016 in various efforts in cleaning up of the river.[12]. A recent study (Mariya et al., 2019) assessed 36 stretches along Ganges during 2012-2016, and found that 6 (16.7%) showed improvement, 14 (38.9%) indicated deterioration and non-significant changes were observed around 16 (44.4%) stretches. It observed that 75% of the pollution resulted from the untreated municipal sewage water, particularly the intermittent discharge from combined sewer systems across the industrial areas.[13].
