A landslide near Chandikadhar area of Rudraprayag district in Uttarakhand killed at least eight people late on Saturday (October 19) evening. The falling rocks hit a car and two motorcycles, plunging the vehicles into an almost 500-metre-deep valley.
According to Mangesh Ghildiyal, district magistrate of Rudraprayag, three bodies have been recovered so far, while efforts are on to search for the remaining five bodies.
The precise identities of the victims will be ascertained once all eight bodies are recovered.
A team of State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and local police arrived at the scene as soon as the information was out. But as boulders were continuously falling from the hill where the incident occurred, full-fledged rescue operations did not begin until Sunday morning.
The vehicles were on their way to Rudraprayag from Sonprayag at the time of the mishap. Many of the victims are likely to be pilgrims returning from the Kedarnath shrine. The car caught in the landslide bears a Delhi registration number.
