She is an Indian playback singer,who composes music occasionally. As one of the best-known and most respected playback singers in India,she has recorded songs for over a 1000 Hindi films and has sung songs in over 36 regional Indian and foreign languages.
She was born in 28 September 1929.She was earlier named Hema at her birth but was later renamed by her parents as Lata after a female character, Latika, in one of her father's plays, BhaawBandhan.She is eldest child of her parents and has younger siblings- Meena, Asha, Usha and Hridaynath.
She trained under Amanat Khan Devaswale and Pandit Tulsidas Sharma.Her first Hindi song was Mata Ek Sapoot Ki Duniya Badal De Tu for the film- Gajaabhaau (1943). She is initially said to have imitated the style of Noor Jehan,an acclaimed singer but with time she developed her own unique style of singing.
From 1948, music director Ghulam Haider mentored her as a singer. He introduced Mangeshkar to producer Sashadhar Mukherjee, who was working then on the movie Shaheed but he dismissed her voice as too thin. Later Haider gave Lata her first major break with the song Dil Mera Toda, Mujhe Kahin Ka Na Chhora in the movie Majboor (1948). But one of her first major hits was Aayega Aanewaala from the movie Mahal (1949).
She has sung highest number of songs about 712 for music director Laxmikant Pyarelal.She had composed music for the first time in 1955 for Marathi movie Ram Ram Pavhane.
She has won several awards and honours, including Padma Bhushan (1969),Padma Vibhushan (1999), Dadasaheb Phalke Award (1989), Maharashtra Bhushan Award (1997),NTR National Award (1999), Bharat Ratna (2001), ANR National Award (2009), three National Film Awards, and 12 Bengal Film Journalists' Association Awards,4 Filmfare Best Female Playback Awards,Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award (1993).
