Magadha was an ancient Indian kingdom in southern Bihar, and was counted as one of the sixteen Mahajanapadas, 'Great Kingdoms' of ancient India. Magadha played an important role in the development of Jainism and Buddhism, and two of India's greatest empires, the Maurya Empire and Gupta Empire, originated in Magadha.

- Magadha is located in the present day Bihar and it is the most powerful Mahajanapada.
- There are sixteen mahajanapadas and they were ruled by kings known as Rajas.
- Each Mahajanapada had a capital city,which was fortified.
- Initially, Rajagaha(Rajgir in Bihar) was the capital of Magadha. Later, in the fourth century BCE, the capital was shifted to Pataliputra (present day Patna).
- Magadha was a region where agriculture was especially productive.
