• Puttaraj Gawai was born on 3rd March 1914 in Haveri district to Revanayya and Siddamma.
• They named him as Puttayya. When he was 2 years his father died and the responsibility of nourishing Puttayya was fully in the hands of his mother.
• He had admirable eyes with an attractive face. As days passed by he was affected with an eye infection.
• His mother tried lots of medication but unlucky Puttayya lost his eyesight at the age of six.
• Later on, puttayya was brought up by his mother's brother who was a musician.
• Puttayya's uncle found that though the child is blind he has the urge to learn music. He taught him all sorts of music and took him to pandit Panchakshara Gawai.
• Under the guidance of pandit Panchakshara Gawai he learnt Hindustan and Karnatic music and became extremely talented musician.
• As Pandit Panchakshara Gawai was his master, his name later came to be known as Puttaraj Gawai.
