It depends on the type of waste whether it is biodegradable or non-biodegradable.

Biodegradable wastes can be broken down completely like food remains, sodden papers,etc

Decomposition is possible because of our friends bacteria. They break down complex biodegradable particles into smaller particles and thus restore the nutrient back to ecosystem
