raja rammohan roy (1774-1833) was one of the greatest social and religious reformers of 19th century . rammohan  roy settled in kolkata in 1814 and soon attracted a group of young men with whose co-operation he started atmiya sabha . its main aim was to do away with the religious and social evils which were prevalent in bengal . he established brahma sabha in 1828 with the object of saving hinduism from the evils caste system and superstitions . it was later named as brahmo samaj . so he was known as "father of modern india " .
