In 2014, the United Nations described violence against women in India as systematic, stretching “from the womb to the tomb”. Sexual violence is a particular problem with national crime statistics from 2016 showing that one rape is reported every 15 minutes on average.
But Talat is one of the growing number of Indian women who are fighting back. Her battle started at the Guaravi One-Stop Crisis Centre in Bhopal – the first of its kind in India – set up in 2014 by the charity ActionAid India and the government of Madhya Pradesh.
The state of Madhya Pradesh has the highest rate of domestic violence in India and the centre was set up in response to the horrific gang rape and murder of a young woman on a bus in New Delhi in 2012, a case which sent shockwaves throughout India and the world.
Since then, the Me Too movement has arrived in the country and accusations of sexual harassment against high profile figures have prompted a nationwide debate, leading to hopes that outdated attitudes to women are changing.
