  • When Z is  fluorine or -OH. In that case hydrogen bonding is possible between the hydrogen of -OH group and fluorine as well as between two diol groups present at 60° w.r.t. each other.
  • But in case of -OCH₃, due to presence of bulky methyl group. Hydrogen bonding may not be possible.

Therefore, the gauche conformer more stable when fluorine or -OH group present.
