As we endeavor to emerge stronger from the struggles of 2020, which have included a global pandemic and historic social unrest, the true value of transformational leadership has never been clearer. There is a tendency to look at “larger than life” figures like Mandela and Lincoln and conclude that while we admire their leadership and accomplishments, their circumstances were so vastly different from our own as to render them irrelevant to us mere mortals. Some may also feel the times we live in today are so fundamentally different from 1860s America or 1990s South Africa that leadership lessons from those periods are purely historical and academic.
