The normal reticulocyte count is 0.5-2.5% and the normal absolute reticulocyte count is 50-100X109/L [4–6]. ARC may be very helpful in initial evaluation of pancytopenia but its utility value is often underestimated.

Severe pancytopenia is defined as absolute neutrophil count < 500/cmm, platelet count < 20,000/cmm, and corrected reticulocyte count < 1%. Presenting symptoms of pancytopenia may be attributable to anaemia, leucopenia, and/or thrombocytopenia.
