The acceleration which is gained by an object because of the gravitational force is called its acceleration due to gravity. Its SI unit is m/s² . Acceleration due to gravity is a vector, which means it has both a magnitude and a direction. The acceleration due to gravity at the surface of Earth is represented as g.

Explanation :

Acceleration due to gravity when an object is dropped from some height, a uniform acceleration is produced in it by the gravitational pull of the earth and this acceleration does not depend on the mass of the falling object) Thus, we can definel acceleration due to gravity as,

It is denoted by' g '. The value of 'g does not depend on the mass of the body. However, it changes from place to place. Generally, the value of acceleration due to gravity is taken as 9.8 m s¯² on or near the surface of earth. Thus, we can conclude that when an object falls to the ground under the gravitational force, its velocity increases at constant rate of 9. 8 m s¯² . In other words, we can say that whena body is dropped freely, it falls withanacceleration of 9.8 m s¯².

Now, another question arises what would happen to the acceleration when a body is thrown vertically upward? When a body is thrown vertically upward, the body undergoes a retardation of 9.8 m s¯². Thus, the velocity of a body thrown vertically upwards will decrease until it reaches zero in this case, the acceleration is called retardation due to decrease in the velocity.
