Acceleration is defined as " the change in the velocity of a moving object with respect to time" is called acceleration. It is the result of all the forces acting on the object. Acceleration is a vector quantity because it has both "magnitude" and "direction".

When you slow down while moving a vehicle velocity decreases and hence acceleration also decrease and its value becomes"negative". similarly, when you speed up your car the increases in velocity increases the acceleration and its value will be "positive".

Since its a vector quantity so its value can be either "positive" or "negative".
