Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) and Luteinizing Hormone (LH)

  • FSH stimulates the growth of primary follicles into graffian follicles in the ovary.

  • LH induces the rupture of graffian follicle and thereby the release of ovum called ovulation.

  • Luteinizing Hormone (LH) and Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) are the hormones secreted by anterior pituitary glands.

  • In males, LH acts on Leydig cells and causes them to release androgens, which stimulate the process of spermatogenesis while the FSH acts on the Sertoli cells, which help in spermiogenesis.

  • In females, FSH initiates the growth of follicles in the ovary.

  • In females, the rapid secretion of LH leading to its maximum level during the mid-cycle is called LH surge.

  • This LH surge triggers ovulation.

  • It induces rupture of Graffian follicle and thereby the release of ovum.
