according to the story Helen couldn't see anything, couldn't speak anything, that's why he had never touched with the experience like what Anne Sullivan was trying to explain her the mystery of life because at the age of her childhood he was like unknown to everything that's why she was so agrressive and stubborn .

Answer Helen was a total spoiled brat and she wouldnt give in without dispute. To make her to the simplest thing such as combing her hair, washing her hands and buttoning up her boots, it was necessery to use force which ofcourse caused a stressful scene and naturally her family always had interfered especially her father who couldnt bear her crying and were ready to give in for the sake of peace.
