Humans being replaced by computers is the stuff of many a sci-fi nightmare. In the recently aired episode 1 of the new series of Channel 4's programme 'Humans', Joe Hawkins (played by Tom-Goodman Hill) is made redundant, as his job as 'regional manager' is replaced by a 'synth'. This is despite his protestations that human relationships are the bedrock of his role (something that is very highly prized in the Lloyd's insurance market).
Of course we must look to technology to support our business processes and make them more efficient, but if anything this should demand a higher user skill level. Sadly, GIGO (Garbage In, Garbage Out) and PICNIC (Problem in Chair, Not in Computer) both ring awfully true where companies don't recognise the need to ensure their users are appropriately skilled.
