Answer:

According to Mendeleev's periodic table eka silicon was later discovered and named as germanium. - True.

MENDELEEV'S PERIODIC TABLE :

➸ Mendeleev's periodic law states that the physical and chemical properties of elements are a periodic function of their atomic masses.

➸ The repetition of elements of properties after certain regular intervals is called periodicity of properties.

➸ There are seven horizontal rows periods and eight vertical columns called groups.

➸ Certain achievements achieved by this periodic table made it better from Newland's law of octaves.

➸ The achievements are as follows :

  • Mendeleev predicted new elements and their properties such as Eka Boron which was later named as Scandium, Eka Silicon which was later named as Germanium and Eka Aluminium later named as Gallium.
  • When noble gases were discovered they could be easily placed in a new group called the zero group without disturbing the existing order of the table.
  • It helped in the systematic study of elements on the basis of their increasing atomic masses and grouping of similar elements together.
  • It also corrected the doubtful atomic masses such as the atomic mass of beryllium which was previously assumed as 13.5 u but corrected in this table as 9 u.

➸ Still, this periodic table had certain limitations. Such as :

  • No fixed position of hydrogen.
  • No position given to isotopes where as it should have been given different positions.
  • Anamalous position of some pairs of elements such as cobalt with higher atomic mass (58.93 u) was placed before nickle (58.71 u) which has lower atomic mass.
  • No similarity of properties or elements in the sub groups such as, the elements in I - A subgroup are not similar to I - B subgroup.
  • As atomic mass can also be in decimals there was difficulty faced while predicting new elements and the number of undiscovered elements.
