Postural assessment from the posterior view is similar to that in the anterior view. Shoulder position, knee interspace, and ankle position are all assessed, in addition to the overall symmetry of the body . The major advantages of the posterior view are additional information regarding heel position and scoliosis screening of the spine.

Ankle position in the posterior view allows assessment of the heel. If the heel is tilted inward, such as occurs with pes planus, the term hindfoot valgus is used to describe the abnormality. Conversely, a heel tilted outward is termed hindfoot varus. These foot positions may also be present during gait, as discussed later.

Posterior postural views allow screening for scoliosis. Scoliosis is a lateral and sometimes rotatory curvature of the spine resulting in a “C”- or “S”-shaped curve as assessed from the posterior view.22 Beginning proximally, shoulder and scapular symmetry are observed. Scoliosis may cause one shoulder to be elevated on one side. In addition, skin creases around spinous processes may be also be present on the convex sides of the curvatures.
