It is a story about a fisherman who lives on the island named Ischia.

In a few pages, he described his experience with Salvatore.

He had to join in Navy of the king, became ill in China and put out of the Navy due to unfitness.

When he came back home with invalidity his girlfriend informed him that she cannot mary an invalid person.

Maugham described the fisherman as his friend and was a great admirer of him.
