His voice of education ordered him to kill the snakes . As per his education , Golden snakes are venomous and black snakes are innocent . The snake that poet saw was golden and thus harmful for him. So his inner voice asked him to kill the snake.

In the poem Snake by D.H Lawrence, the poet feels the guilt and regret after hitting the snake. The voice of education lures him to hit the snake and blames it. The voice of education here asks the poet to kill the snake as it was considered poisonous due to its color as yellow-belly brown. Therefore, the poet threw the log of wood at the snake.
He despises himself by thinking about how ‘Paltry, how vulgar, what a mean act!’ he did. Human education is cursed through his inner voice.
