(i) Money has a way of taking wings unto itself means that money will always find a way to get used up or wasted for several reasons such as day to day expenses, etc. In the story Mr. Easton tries to say that for these reasons, he needed to find a way to make money.

(ii) To keep step with the crowd basically means that in order for Mr. Easton to remain friends with the high profile people he knew, he would have to keep his monetary balance high as well, in order to stay the same level as his friends were.
