Explanation:

  • Marian Anderson was an American singer of spirituals and classical music.  From the year 1925 to 1965 she performed in concerts and recitals with prominent orchestras in all of the US as well as Europe.
  • In the mid-twentieth century, Anderson became a leading figure in black artists 'struggle to alleviate racial prejudice. The girls of the American review actively pursue a policy of non-discrimination, promoting and celebrating diversity within the organisation. In 1939, however, the DAR Constitution Hall refused opera singer Marian Anderson the opportunity to perform owing to her race.
  • This event placed Anderson at an exceptional standard for a classical musician in the international community. In 9th April 1939 which happened to be Easter Sunday, at the foot of the Lincoln Memorial in the capital, Anderson performed an open-air concert with the support and assistance of the First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt and her husband President Franklin D. Roosevelt. She sang to over 75,000 people in the presence of a mixed crowd and millions of radio listeners. The DAR later acknowledged the need for reform and on many occasions Marian Anderson sang at Constitution Hall
