Khan was born on 21 march 1916 into a family of traditional muslim musician in Bhirung Raut ki Gali,Dumraon in what is now the Eastern Indian state of bihar, as the second son of Paigambar Bux khan and Mitthan.Ustad Bismillah khan elevated the status of the shehnai,a wind instrument ,in Indian classical music and took it to the global audience.

He chose a pipe with a natural hollow stem that was longer and broader than the pungi,and made seven holes on the body of the pipe,When he played on it,closing and opening some of these holes,soft and melodious sounds were produced.Since it was first played in the Shah's chambers and was played by a nai (barber).The instrument was named the 'shehnai'.

At the age of 14,Bismillah accompanied his uncle to the Allahabad Music Conference.At the end of his recital,Ustad Faiyaz Khan patted the young boy and said "Work hard and you shall make it".With the opening of All India Radio in lucknow in 1938 came Bismillah's big break.

Inspite of having travelled all over the world Khansaav as he foundly called- is ezceedingly fond of Benaras and Dumraon.
