George Washington (1732 – 1799) was the Commander of the US Continental Army in the American Revolutionary War which lasted from 1775 to 1783.

Britain was in debt after several wars and therefore was looking at ways and means of raising money. The easiest way according to George Washington and other leaders, were to tax the American colonies. For this they first passed an Act in 1764 banning paper currency in the colonies. This was followed by several other Acts by which tax could be collected.
