Well, there are a number of reasons, which include the similarities between our two planets, the availability of water, the prospects for generating food, oxygen, and building materials on-site. And there’s even the long-term benefits of using Mars as a source of raw materials and transforming it into a liveable environment.
I'm thinking farmers and boilermakers, with a few engineer types to cut down on the light-speed delays. Most of the engineering work will be done on Earth, where most of the intricate equipment will be built, and Mars will be populated with people doing backbreaking labour struggling to make enough food to feed themselves and to keep enough of that intricate equipment running to keep breathing.
