Explanation: Causes of Canton Trade failure
- The Canton trade system evolved between foreign merchants mainly British and Chinese.
- The trade flourished in the trading city of Guangzhou (Canton) situated in the South China between seventeenth and nineteenth century.
- The main features of the above trading pattern developed between the period 1760 and 1842.
- During this period foreign trade would enter China however confined to Canton.
- The foreign traders which entered the city were made to follow a series of regulations laid down by the government of China.
- There were many factors which led to the end of Chinese trade dominance over the West.
- One was the trade of opium which the Western powers started smuggling into China .The main reason of doing so was to make amends for a lack of other exports.
- Secondly was the naval technology marked by the unfolding of steam-powered vessels by the western world which were deployed both as warships and merchant ships.
- The Canton trade system collapsed after the Opium War which lasted from 1839 to 1842.
- In this war the Chinese were defeated by the British under the pretext of free trade.
- The defeat forced the Chinese to legalize imports of opium, agree to fixed low tariff and opening of new ports for trade.
