Concept:

Addition of electron,and reach noble gas configuration.

Given

Group 17 elements.

Solution

We know that all atoms try to attain the nearest noble gas configuration.

The electronic Configuration of a group 17 element is given by

[X]=ns^{2}np^{5}

and the noble gas configuration is given by

[Noble]=ns^{2}np^{6}

Since the difference is of one electron , the group 17 elements gain an electron to reach the nearest noble gas configuration
