Salinity is the concentration of salt in the body of water i.e. salt found in 1000 grams of water.

Variations in saltwater is due to deficiency or overabundance of fresh water, thermal or mechanical currents making the ocean heterogeneous and percentage of oxygen, phosphates, carbon, nitrogen, chlorides etc.

Salinity affects seawater density which the higher the salinity the more dense is water which determines the movement of deep-ocean currents.

Salinity is the amount of salt concentration in the ocean water and is due to combined effects of terrestrial and atmospheric changes.

Explanation:

  • Salinity refers to contents dissolved in water and is measured by parts per million or thousand, on average the salinity of oceanic water is about 35‰ Even though a small variation in the amount of ocean surface salinity concentration can affect the cycle of seawater.
  • Certain factors like the weathering of minerals rocks and evaporation of ocean water. Salinity can have severe effects on the availability of freshwater, a rise in global temperatures, and which may lead to increase global warming. Thereby leading to climate change.
