Accumulation of lactic acid can cause muscle cramps. We get relief from muscle cramps after a hot water bath or massage. Hot water bath or massage improves Blood Circulation, as a result of which, oxygen supply to the muscle cell increases.

  1. The Food that we eat gets converted to Glucose by the process of Digestion. Glucose gets mixed with Blood in Villi of Small Intestine.
  2. Blood carries Oxygen from Lungs and Glucose to every Cell. Cell synthesizes ATP molecules from Glucose and stores them in Mitochondria of the Cell.
  3. When energy is needed, these ATP molecules burn-out to give instant energy to the body.
  4. If a person is continuously doing strenuous exercises, He will burn-out his ATP molecules completely. In order to supply energy continuously, Cell takes-in Glucose from Blood and immediately breaks it into energy and lactic acid.
  5. Here proper oxidation does not take place, but energy is supplied in large amount. When this continues from some time, lactic acid gets built-up in the Cell which causes muscle cramps.

Blood Circulation increases, when we take hot-water bath or massage. Since Blood is carrying oxygen with it, this oxygen oxidizes lactic acid and hence the person gets relief from muscle cramps.
